Reduce Merchandise Theft and Fraud with 2D Barcodes
Traditional linear barcodes with limited data capacity offer minimal protection against theft and fraud. These barcodes typically encode only the GTIN, making it difficult to track individual items or verify their authenticity, which makes retailers susceptible to counterfeit products, theft, and fraudulent returns. 2D barcodes, with their ability to store significantly more data, provide a robust solution for reducing merchandise theft and fraud.
By encoding additional information such as serial numbers, batch/lot numbers, and dates, 2D barcodes enable retailers to: verify product authenticity, enhance traceability in the supply chain, and reduce fraudulent returns. Additional benefits of 2D barcodes include preventing “Mis-Mates” of items meant to be sold in pairs, improving reverse logistics by informing store associates what to do with returned products, and deterring theft. The use of serialized GTINs (SGTINs) at the point of sale (POS) can unlock new and more robust sales data that a GTIN alone cannot. Customizable systems allow each item to be identified with barcodes or 2D codes throughout the production process, from the storage unit to the retail stage. 2D barcodes can identify illicit practices and address issues of product recalls, detection, and prevention of diversion and parallel and grey markets.
To effectively leverage 2D barcodes for loss prevention, retailers should consider the following implementation strategies:
- Select the appropriate 2D barcode symbology: Options include encoding the GS1 Digital Link with Data Matrix or QR Code. All IDAutomation products are compatible with the GS1 Digital Link, including Data Matrix Fonts and QR Code Fonts.
- Encode relevant data: Determine the data elements to encode in the 2D barcode based on specific security needs, such as serial numbers, batch/lot numbers, manufacturing dates, and product authentication codes.
- Integrate with POS and inventory management systems: Ensure that POS systems and inventory management software can capture and process the additional data encoded in 2D barcodes to enable real-time tracking, authentication, and fraud detection.
- Implement robust scanning and verification processes: Equip store associates with barcode scanners capable of reading 2D barcodes and establish verification procedures to authenticate products and prevent fraudulent activities.
- Educate consumers: Inform customers about the benefits of 2D barcodes in ensuring product authenticity and security, encouraging them to participate in verification processes, and report suspicious activities.
By embracing 2D barcodes and implementing these strategies, retailers can create a more secure and trustworthy shopping environment, reducing losses from theft and fraud while enhancing customer confidence and loyalty.
